Soon after a woman discovers that she is expecting a child, she and her partner will likely be asked “so do you have a theme for the nursery yet?” Some expectant parents have dreamed of their nursery for years, while others haven’t given it much thought.
As a father of 5 children, I remember preparing a nursery for our first child, and the excitement with which we did that. Looking back on the experience, and adding in my experience as a painter, I’d like to offer a few tips to help you along in your process.
The starting point in preparing a nursery is often picking a theme. For those who are having trouble coming up with one, there are many ideas on the Internet. One website that contains ideas is: http://www.unique-baby-gear-ideas.com/baby-nursery-theme.html.
Once the theme is selected, work can begin, which often means painting. I recommend choosing light or soft colors. My reasons for this are:
• Since your baby will be sleeping in this room, you will want the colors to be soothing.
• Chances are high that you will be repainting this room within a few years when your child starts expressing him or herself and wants something different. Soft colors are easier to cover up.
Many pregnant women are concerned about exposure to paint fumes, and can be assured that today’s latex paints are safe during pregnancy. However, even despite this some couples may choose not to paint on their own either because of a lack of time, the tiredness that often accompanies pregnancy, or feeling unbalanced climbing ladders to reach the tops of walls. If you have any of these concerns, call a local painter to provide a price quote for your room. Most will be happy to assist you with small or large painting projects, and some can also assist you with hanging window treatments or assembling nursery furniture.
After the room is painted, adding accessories is what makes the room. Do not be afraid to experiment. Add some high contrast items near the changing table to catch baby’s attention, or choose a family heirloom rocking chair. This room has special meaning to your growing family, so be sure to make it bear your unique touch!
